Headwaters to host West African djembe drum presentation

On Saturday April 19th at 10:00am Headwaters Music & Arts will host Senegalese language and culture expert Mounirou Sow for a presentation about the West African djembe (pronounced JEM-bay) drum as part of the “Our World of Music & Art” series. Mounirou will explain the history and cultural significance of the djembe and demonstrate different rhythms and notes to play on the drum. Djembes will be available for audience members to try.

Fluent in French, English, Wolof and Pular, Mounirou Sow is a dynamic educator and champion of Senegalese culture. He holds a Master’s degree in business strategy and development from Université Gaston Berger in Saint-Louis Senegal, and is the founder of IEWAC, an organization that introduces West African cultures to North Americans through educational programs and cultural immersion experiences. Mounirou encourages people to develop their curiosity and challenges them to explore the world and appreciate cultural differences. As an instructor for Where There Be Dragons in Senegal, he deepened his commitment to language teaching and cultural exchange. He has taught French in a variety of settings to a wide range of learners - from school age children to adults and families - and currently teaches at Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji. Outside of his professional life, Momo is passionate about the djembe, an instrument that embodies the heart and rhythm of African culture. Mounirou’s mission is to share his love of language and culture with others, inspiring them to engage in the richness and diversity of this world.

This event is free and open to the public, for adults and kids age 7 and older. Join us to discover this drum from West Africa, learn about its importance to the people of the region, and try your hand at making new rhythms!
