Fairytales and Folklore Camp + Music Creativity Camp

Apple Blossom Summer Camp and Headwaters Music and Arts have teamed up to offer summer programming for children ages 4 ½ to 8 Monday, August 14 – Thursday, August 17. We have three flexible scheduling options – sign up for just the morning, just the afternoon, or attend both sessions!

Fairytales and Folklore Camp
9am-12:30pm

Join us in the magical outdoor space at Rail River Folk School for four mornings of storytelling fun! Each day begins with a story told using props or puppets: Jack and the Beanstalk, Mashenka and the Bear, the Legend of Arachne the Weaver, and The Three Little Pigs. We will explore the Story of the Day through imaginative play and a real life activity based on the story: gardening, cooking, fiber arts, and fort building. Use your imagination to change or add to the story as we play among the gardens and trees. Snack provided.

Creativity Camp 1-4pm

From Picasso to Mozart, explore your creative side with an afternoon of lively, hands-on art and music activities. Bring to life famous artists like Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock as you create your own works of art each day. Wear clothes you can paint in! Make your own instrument including a guitar, violin, or kazoo. Have a music lesson on violin, guitar, cello or piano. You will be treated to music themed snacks. Join us 3:30 Thursday for a celebration!

Want to attend both events? The cost to attend both is only $125 for both morning and afternoon sessions, which includes supervised lunch and walk from Apple Blossom Summer Camp to Headwaters Music and Arts (Bring a lunch from home)

Headwaters Art Camp @ Headwaters Music and Arts

Headwaters Art Camp @ Headwaters Music and Arts | Bemidji | Minnesota | United States

Join us for 9:00-3:00pm for a Headwaters’ Art Camp. During this fast-paced program, participants will work with different skilled artists to advance their skills. Led by Tom Daly, with guest artists Al Belleveau, Stacey Stang, Susan Kedzie, author and illustrator of A Thousand Purring Cats, and Joanna Dymond, author of Howling Yowling Growling with the Lost River Wolf Pack, will work with participants to create animal art in clay, pastels, murals, acrylics, drawing, and plasma welding.

Participants will develop an artist’s statement and learn how to exhibit their work in Friday’s public art exhibition at 3 pm. Participants will be divided into two groups based on age, and should plan to bring a bagged lunch each day.
Ages 9-18, the cost to attend is $125 per participant, applications for partial scholarships available. The registration deadline 5 pm August 15, 2017 (if deadline has passed, contact us about late registration options). A workshop inspired by Kim Addonizio’s book, Ordinary Genius, about the magic, technique and artistry awakened when one is in the throes of writing a poem! For poets who want to dive deep, develop humor and voice, and let the images lead. This three session course, will be led by published author and professor at BSU, Carol Ann Russell. If you are currently a poet this class is for you.

Keila McCracken owner and operator of Bare Cloth, a sustainable design and clothing business in Bemidji, MN will lead the class in Sashiko mending. Shashiko is a method used to mend clothing that is worn and torn in a way that is artistic and that creates aesthetic value. Sashiko is one of oldest known mending stitches in human history, originating in Eastern Asia, it is now practiced throughout the world for its durability, visual and aesthetic and cultural significance. All levels of experience are welcome. Bring your well-loved clothes that are need of repair and add value and beauty through the process of repairing it.
